Russell was the daughter of a mother of both black and white parents. She was raised on her mother's side. Her skin color made her feel unaccepted in her early years. Their family was struggling financially. They were constantly on the move and moved sixteen times to help support their father's work. Russell stated that in spite of all the challenges it was always the chance to reinvent yourself, to make something completely new. Russell's parents struggled financially and she was constantly traveling. She was 18 when she started her first acting class. She saved her money from work to buy a car and drove to Los Angeles to audition. Once her savings ran out she would work until she had enough money to attend another audition. This routine was followed for four more years until she was given her first TV part.
